While taxonomic perspectives have traditionally been used to study diversity shifts, our study takes a novel approach by examining these patterns through morpho-functional (MF) groups. Using fossil occurrence data from the Paleocene to the Pleistocene, we identified species diversity within MF groups as a driving factor impacting originations and extinctions, contributing to diversity dependence. Our results highlight that species capable of constructing biogenic habitats play a critical role in shaping reef community structure, continuously influencing both species diversity and reef functional composition over time.This includes the codes and data sets used for producing this study.
