Idiomaticity, familiarity and preceding information in BP idioms processing
Abstract: Idioms are typically characterized as non-compositional strings of words in which figurative meaning cannot be derived from the interpretation of its parts; the degree of compositionality, however, is variable. This paper investigates the comprehension of verb + complement idioms in Brazilian Portuguese (e.g. “passar a bola”, “pintar o sete”). Our research intends to explore to what extent internal and external factors affect the comprehension of idioms. We report the results of a maze task (self-paced reading experiment) in which the critical segment was related to the verb complement: idiomatic vs. literal complement (e.g. open the heart/ the door). The results revealed significant effects of the three investigated variables, suggesting that the degree of idiomaticity, the speaker's familiarity with the idiom and the previous context affect the processing of the idioms and, therefore, should be considered in a model that aims to explain the representation, access and comprehension of these structures.

Latent semantics of action verbs reflect phonetic parameters of intensity and emotional content
Conjuring up our thoughts, language reflects statistical patterns of word co-occurrences which in turn come to describe how we perceive the world. Whether counting how frequently nouns and verbs combine in Google search queries, or extracting eigenvectors from term document matrices made up of Wikipedia lines and Shakespeare plots, the resulting latent semantics capture not only the associative links which form concepts, but also spatial dimensions embedded within the surface structure of language. As both the shape and movements of objects have been found to be associated with phonetic contrasts already in toddlers, this study explores whether articulatory and acoustic parameters may likewise differentiate the latent semantics of action verbs. Selecting 3 x 20 emotion, face, and hand related verbs known to activate premotor areas in the brain, their mutual cosine similarities were computed using latent semantic analysis LSA, and the resulting adjacency matrices were compared based on two different large scale text corpora; HAWIK and TASA. Applying hierarchical clustering to identify common structures across the two text corpora, the verbs largely divide into combined mouth and hand movements versus emotional expressions. Transforming the verbs into their constituent phonemes, the clustered small and large size movements appear differentiated by front versus back vowels corresponding to increasing levels of arousal. Whereas the clustered emotional verbs seem characterized by sequences of close versus open jaw produced phonemes, generating up- or downwards shifts in formant frequencies that may influence their perceived valence. Suggesting, that the latent semantics of action verbs reflect parameters of intensity and emotional polarity that appear correlated with the articulatory contrasts and acoustic characteristics of phonemes

Replication Data for Grammatical Gender in Norwegian Dialects: Variation, Acquisition and Change (GenVAC)
[Dataset abstract:] The dataset consists of data related to investigations of grammatical gender across multiple Norwegian dialects. The data has been collected as part of the GenVAC project, funded by the Research Council of Norway 2020-2025, grant number 301094. The goal of GenVAC is to study changes in grammatical gender through large-scale experimental studies. In particular, it scrutinizes to what extent feminine gender is disappearing from Norwegian dialects based on four production experiments and eye-tracking studies. The data will be made available towards the end of the project. In addition, this dataset also includes files that enable scholars to use our methodology. The PowerPoint slides are available as original files and as pdfs for all four experiments. The background questionnaire has also been included, alongside a brief description of how to conduct the four experiments. These files are made available immediately. Since this project focuses on Norwegian, the accompanying article alongside all the material in this dataset are in Norwegian. Since this kind of work is impossible to do without knowing Norwegian, the material has not been translated.

Wordlists of languages of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea
Recordings and transcription of a large wordlist (c. 1,100 items) for 10 language varieties of Indonesia and one language of Papua New Guinea. Additional textual data and other materials were collected for a subset of languages. Made as part of the OCSEAN (OCeanic and South East Asian Navigators; MSCA-RISE-2019, Project Number 873207) project. The items containing materials from languages of Indonesia were collected during fieldwork in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024. The item containing materials for the language from Papua New Guinea was collected during the linguistic summer school held in Tartu, Estonia, in 2024.

The position of pronominal clitics in Brazilian Portuguese: the contribution of language perception investigation
Abstract: This paper aims to bring evidence – from the comparative analysis of investigations about the order of pronominal clitics based on Variationist Sociolinguistics and Experimental Phonology (VIEIRA, 2002; CORRÊA, 2009; 2012) – of the contribution of studies that combine description of linguistic production and perception, aided by speech resynthesis. Associating methodologies, the researches show that it is possible to define (i) the phonological direction of the unstressed pronouns, to the right (like pretonic syllables) or to the left (like post-tonic syllables); (ii) the acoustic parameters responsible for this direction; and, consequently, to specify, in sociophonetic terms, the characteristics which can be associated with certain structures and varieties.
