Lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) is the most recently domesticated agricultural crop on cultivation. Its seeds have a high level of protein content similar to other legume species, but they are low in oil and starch and high in dietary fibre. Medical and dietetic studies have shown that consuming sweet lupin enriched food has significant health benefits. We report the first genome sequence for this plant species with 26.9x coverage of the genome which is predicted to contain 57,807 genes. Furthermore, we applied the NGS based RAD-sequencing technology to screen the genomes of a genetic population containing 94 F8 recombinant inbred lines, and obtained 8,244 sequence-defined SNP markers, based on which a genetic map has been constructed.
