The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) was founded in 1983 through a joint initiative by members of both the Republican and Democratic Parties, and is dedicated to developing and strengthening democratic systems worldwide. Since its establishment in 1983, NED has remained at the forefront of global democratic struggles, and has evolved into a hub for activities, resource sharing and knowledge exchange among democratic activists, practitioners and scholars across the world. The primary funding source of NED comes from annual fiscal appropriations from the United States Congress, with its main distribution channel being the United States Information Agency. In addition to providing financial donations, NED serves as a supporter and host institution for entities including the *Journal of Democracy*, the World Movement for Democracy, the International Forum for Democratic Studies, the Democracy Fellows Program, the Network of Democracy Research Institutes, the International Center for Media Assistance and other relevant organizations.
