Sequencing of rinderpest virus strains

Rinderpest, a devastating disease of large ruminants, was the first animal disease to is be globally eradicated. CIRAD has been designated Rinderpest Holding Facility (RHF) category A and B for the RPV and vaccines strains retained in its collection. It has sequenced the full genome of RPV wild and vaccine strains it its stock using different sequencing methods in order to (i) destroy wild pathogenic strains while retaining genetic information for later studies and (ii) assess the quality of vaccine strains to be made available in case of re-emergence of the disease.
