Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a prime example of a pathogen displaying high intrinsic antibiotic resistance as well as the ability to tolerate a variety of biocides such as antiseptics and preservatives. The development of cross-resistance between biocides and antibiotics necessitates a greater restrain in the use of biocides to preserve the usefulness of these important chemicals and to extend the lifetime of currently used antibiotics.
