NZFFD Fish Spawning Habitats Various types of fish species live and spawn their eggs during different times of the year in freshwaters of New Zealand. The species have evolved to depend on the unique ecological conditions of their habitat. Therefore, they are vulnerable to any impact on their habitat. Any activity such as logging the riparian trees on the sides of rivers or the surrounding forest can impact the existence of these fish species. The objective of this analysis was to find parts of rivers that are used by various fish species for spawning. MPI needs to know that, so that it can regulate forest logging on the immediate sides of those rivers. The restrictions on logging apply when one or two conditions as below are established: A. The river reach (or segment) is within 1 km upstream or downstream of any NZFFD sample (this layer) B. The river reach has an associated probability of greater than 50 % for at least one fish species (the modelled predictive layers). This dataset was revised in June 2026 and was published following Gazette in June 2026. Non-migratory Fish Spawning Habitats The original spatial data for each non-migratory fish species was received from the department of Conservation (DOC) as individual shapefiles for each species. These data showed the habitat range of species along rivers indicated as slim buffers (~1-2m). These buffers, however, are indicative only and do not represent the areas where the regulation applies, because: a) size of these buffers are too small falling short of the regulation requirements, b) river data used as the basis of this layer has spatial inaccuracies which makes it impossible to locate the exact boundaries of the buffer areas that the regulation would apply. The above layers were merged into one spatial layer and the attributes were standardised to comply with the rest of spatial layers within the NES (National Environmental Standards) fish database. The added attributes included scientific names, common names, spawning period and migration habit of fish species. Some of the species received in this category from DOC are known to be migratory (diadromous) which are generally identified as WhiteBait. This dataset was revised in June 2026 and was published following Gazette in June 2026. Fish Spawning Modelled Probability over 50% The predictive fish species habitats were provided by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). This data was refined and made into a spatial layer by MPI. The resulting spatial layer indicates sections of rivers where there is 50% or more probability for the existence of given species. Along with the sampled NZFFD data, these habitats are used by MPI to determine sections of rivers where freshwater fish species use for spawning, which in effect, requires setting limitations on deforestation on the margins of those rivers.
