A persistent outbreak of tuberculosis in the East Midlands, UK, was characterised by whole genome sequencing of outbreak strains and comparison with other circulating Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains from the region. Phenotypic analysis of the persistent strains when compared to control strains, or to a successfully eradicated local outbreak strain, revealed the persistent strains had a distinct rapid growth phenotype in macrophages.
