资源简介:
In response to a planning condition on the construction of an extension south of the existing building at the Sun Inn, 45 High Street, Chobham, Surrey, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. The monitoring the groundworks for the new garage revealed a layer of mixed made ground, indicative of demolition material, beneath a modern car park surface. Numerous late post medieval/ modern services were observed crossing the site. Natural sand was encountered around 0.45m from the surface. Subsoil only survived in a short section of the western footings indicating the site had been extensively disturbed. 19th century cartographic evidence indicated the presence of buildings on the site forming a yard to the south of the present building. However, no cut features were observed over the duration of this work. No evidence of activity prior to late post medieval/ modern period survived on the site, however the stratigraphy suggests that the grassed garden area to the west of the present works may be less disturbed
