This dataset contains socio-economic statistical data for cities and counties in Jiangsu Province, dating to 1997. It was compiled using the *Jiangsu Statistical Yearbook 1998* hosted on CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) and other supplementary statistical materials. The dataset covers multiple thematic categories: population, employed population, gross domestic product (GDP), transportation, completed fixed asset investment, culture and public health, fiscal revenue, science and technology, education, and others. Specific included indicators are as follows: number of on-post staff and workers (ten thousand persons), rural employed persons (ten thousand persons), local gross domestic product (ten thousand yuan), total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery (ten thousand yuan), number of industrial enterprises (units), total industrial output value (ten thousand yuan), highway passenger traffic volume (ten thousand persons), highway freight traffic volume (ten thousand tons), urban fixed asset investment (ten thousand yuan), number of public libraries (units), collection size of public libraries (one thousand volumes), number of health institutions (units), number of hospital beds (units), number of health technical personnel (persons), and local general public budget revenue (ten thousand yuan).
