Cargo transported through Northern Sea Route in Russia 2011-2022

The annual cargo transportation volume via the Northern Sea Route (NRS) increased between 2011 and 2021. The figure reached roughly 34.1 million tons in 2022, having decreased from the previous year. The Northern Sea Route runs from the Bering Strait to the Barents Sea, where Russia borders with Norway. Ships sailing through the this passage save approximately seven to 10 days on the way, which significantly increased both the importance of the NRS and its profitability.
