Bioluminescent Vibrio fischeri bacteria form symbiotic relationships with squid and fish hosts. The bacterial-host interaction serves as a model for bacterial colonization of host epithelial tissue, for inter-domain signaling and cell-cell communication, and for the development and evolution of host specificity. V. fischeri SR5 was isolated from a bobtail squid in the Mediterranean Sea, Sepiola robusta, and serves as a valuable comparative organism to understand how signal transduction leads to shifts in host range.
