Hibernation, an extraordinarily dynamic and extreme phenotype for mammals, remains poorly understood. Genome-based and genetic mapping approaches can provide critical insight into the evolutionary and molecular mechanisms that underlie this phenotype. The 13-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) is a model hibernator. The goal of this project is to increase the contiguity of the genome assembly in order to provide an enabling resource for researchers this model system.
