Rhythmic imbalanced triads were classified as having 1 or 2 rhythmic homoeologs q < 0.01 where the other homoeolog has a q > 0.05. Triads with balanced rhythmicity have 3 rhythmic homoeologs q < 0.05. In total, chromosome position data was found for 4,225 of these triads. Expected maximum run lengths for each category were calculated as described in S5 Note. For Category test 3, Triads lacking rhythmicity on the A chromosome are either: triads with 1 rhythmic homeolog on the B subgenome, triads with 1 rhythmic homoeolog on the D subgenome or triads with 2 rhythmic homoeologs on the B and D subgenomes. The same logic applies to the other 2 categories. P-values for randomness in each category set were computed using a Wald–Wolfowitz test using publicly available code: https://github.com/psinger/RunsTest and implemented in Python.
