From the self-pollinated offspring of hydrangea 'Taube', a progeny was discovered where the young stem epidermis was green while the mature stem epidermis was dark purplish red. To explore the mechanism of its color change, the green young stem was wrapped in aluminum foil, and the young stems of the same period were used as controls. Twenty days later, when the young stems of the control group turned dark purplish red, the young stems wrapped in tin foil remained green. Transcriptome sequencing was performed on the epidermis of green young stems (S1), dark red stems (S2), and stems treated with aluminum foil (ST).
