Cluelessness Does Not Entail Paralysis: Why Cosmic Blindness Does Not Require Moral Equivalence

Anthony DiGiovanni's Cluelessness Challenge argues that our inability to reliably estimate the long-term consequences of our actions leaves the agent-neutral effective altruist without a justified reason to prefer one action over another. In this paper, I accept DiGiovanni's epistemic premises but challenge the leap from expected value is undefined to there is no reason to prefer any action. I argue that this leap depends on three hidden assumptions: (1) that the agent is an isolated being facing a single cosmic unknown, (2) that the cosmic unknown swallows the entire equation, rendering the difference between actions undefined, and (3) that access to agent-neutral reasons requires cosmic calculation from a View from Nowhere. Using an analytical framework comprising living reality (B), evaluative consciousness (F), and the agent-relative evaluative trace (Nf), I demonstrate that: (a) the cosmic unknown cannot ground a preference for one action over another because it is epistemically symmetric across all options, and comparison is settled by the local component; (b) individual ignorance is addressed through the Distributed Epistemic Network; and (c) agent-neutral reasons exist and are accessible, but not through cosmic calculation rather, through the situated interaction between an evaluative consciousness and a living reality.
