Scavenging of atmospheric trace gases has been recognized as one of the lifestyle-definingcapabilities of microorganisms in terrestrial polar ecosystems. Several metagenome-assembled genomes of as-yet-uncultivated methanotrophic bacteria, which consumeatmospheric CH 4 in these ecosystems, have been retrieved in cultivation-independentstudies.
