VPRS 12647 Contract Register, Toll Funds

The Central Roads Board, beginning in 1853, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).One of the means whereby the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges was financed was by the charging of tolls along main roads and for the crossing of rivers. Toll funds were utilised for the letting of construction and maintenance contracts. This series consists of a contract register giving the details of contracts and other payments of expenses (e.g. wages, travelling expenses) for contracts for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges financed by funds from the collection of tolls. Details included a description of the contract, the contractor, the components and payments made on the contract.VPRS 12647/P1 was previously registered as Unit 4 of VPRS 1146/P Register of Tolls. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
