Description :-
AURORA – Supervision and Control of Intelligent Operating Systems is a research framework that addresses the growing gap between the rapid deployment of intelligent operating systems and the limited maturity of governance, supervision, and internal control mechanisms required to ensure their safety, reliability, and alignment with societal values.
As artificial intelligence systems increasingly operate within critical domains—such as digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, financial systems, and automated decision-making—the absence of embedded oversight architectures introduces significant risks. These include reduced operational transparency, delayed detection of system deviations, misuse of automated capabilities, and insufficient mechanisms for timely human intervention during high-impact failures.
This research proposes a multi-layered supervision and control model designed to function within intelligent operating systems, rather than relying exclusively on external regulation or post-incident governance measures. The framework emphasizes real-time monitoring, internal behavioral auditing, continuous risk signaling, and structured escalation pathways that enable effective human review and intervention when predefined operational thresholds are exceeded.
AURORA introduces a structured architectural model supported by a matrix of thirteen conceptual innovations, each targeting a specific limitation observed in contemporary intelligent operating systems. Collectively, these innovations aim to:
Enhance internal transparency and traceability of system actions
Enable early detection of abnormal, unsafe, or unintended behaviors
Support continuous and context-aware risk assessment during operation
Preserve human authority through controlled and auditable intervention mechanisms
Strengthen trust, accountability, and operational resilience
The research adopts a self-critical and transparent methodology, explicitly documenting design decisions, recognized limitations, and corrective actions undertaken throughout the development process. This approach reflects a commitment to scientific integrity, responsible innovation, and methodological rigor.
The AURORA framework aligns with internationally recognized governance and risk management principles, including those established by NIST, ISO/IEC, and UNESCO, while maintaining conceptual independence and adaptability across diverse regulatory, cultural, and institutional environments.
Ultimately, AURORA contributes to the evolving field of AI governance by shifting focus from abstract ethical declarations toward practical, operational supervision mechanisms that can be embedded, evaluated, and iteratively improved. The framework is intended to support researchers, system architects, policymakers, and organizations seeking actionable pathways toward safer, more accountable, and human-centered intelligent systems.
