Ammonium sulfite pretreatment was creatively introduced as a new method for bamboo pretreatment to produce sugars. The chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis of bamboo is significantly affected by ammonium sulfite pretreatments. A relative completely enzymatic hydrolysis of bamboo cellulose can be achieved using high concentration
(30% and 45%) pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis with a cellulase loading of 15 FPU/g glucan. The results suggested that removal of lignin from bamboo could be more critical to its enzymatic digestibility.
