NRS-16626 | Rolling Stock Contract Registers

This record series consists of two registers containing details of contracts let for construction of rolling stock and permanent way. These contracts were made between Department of Railways of New South Wales and public or private companies. The records were maintained in a two-page format divided into two main sections: particulars of contract; and voucher. The contract section sets out the following particulars: Contract Number; Specification Number; Name of Contractor; Particular of Vehicles contracted for; Amount; Commissioner’s Approval Number; Date of acceptance; Dates specified for Delivery and conditions of Contract; Date of Agreement; Bank Guarantee and Memoranda. This section shows dates, details and amounts authorised for extras or deductions under the Contract with following columns: Due as per Contract; Actual Deliveries; Penalties incurred; Amount and Remarks. The voucher section records the following details of payments; Date of Vouchers; Voucher Numbers; Particulars of Vouchers; and Amount.The registers also include some correspondence.There is a numerical index of contract numbers at the front of each volumes. It would appear that the contracts recorded in this series are larger and more valuable than those in series NRS 16450 Contract Registers for Maintenance and Construction of Rolling Stock, 1896 – 1967 although there is cross reference between the two series. Separate volume numbering and overlapping dates suggest that these were originally two series. This series was originally part of State Rail Archives Series R244. This series included Contract Registers for Maintenance and Construction of Contract Registers for Siding Accommodation. These have been separated from this series and now constitute NRS 16450 Contract Registers for Maintenance and Construction of Rolling Stock, 1896 – 1967 and NRS 16625 Contract Registers for Siding Accommodation 1914 - 1935Custody History From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as part of series R244. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R244 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
