Research organizations need the co-production of knowledge for climate adaptation

As climate change progresses globally, regional ecosystems are responding outside limits forecasted by many Earth system models. Despite years of progress, Earth science from Western academic institutions is challenged to capture change across scales. As these gaps emerge, Western scientists are recognizing that Indigenous science integrates millennia of observations and knowledge at regional scales. As Indigenous knowledge has not been adequately considered within the Western scientific community, this key regional information has been lost to Western scientific progress. With the consequences of climate change now severely felt in all ecosystems, the co-production of knowledge between Western and Indigenous knowledge practitioners is necessary to understand our changing Earth system.
