The strain Moorea producens NAK12DEC93-3La (aka 3L) was collected from Curaçao in December of 1993. It was isolated as a mono-algal culture, separated from a second cyanobacterium, Okeania hirsuta 3L. Moorea producens 3L was sequenced by many Sanger® efforts, as described by Jones and Monroe et al., 2011. Its first genome was published along the cited paper. In this project, we used a reference genome (Moorea producens PAL 15AUG08-1) to substantially improve the assembly of M. producens 3L. This cyanobacterial genus Moorea has yielded more than 40% of all reported marine cyanobacterial natural products. However, incomplete genomic information has hampered the discovery of novel compounds using genome mining approaches of Moorea strains. This highlights the importance of obtaining complete genomes
