SAKERNAS, 1987

Sakernas, otherwise known as the National Labour Force Survey (NLFS), is a nationwide survey conducted by the Directorate of Population and Employment Statistics at the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics/Badan Pusat Statistik Republik Indonesian (CPS/BPS) to obtain statistics on employment patterns in Indonesia. Labour force related data collection is undertaken in all provinces of Indonesia using the National Labour Force Surveys (Sakernas), but also the National Social-Economic Surveys (Susenas), Population Censuses (SP), and Population Intercensal Surveys (Supas). These instruments have used the same concepts and definitions (since 1976), although the surveys vary in frequency and coverage. The Population Censuses and Intercensal Surveys are more focused on the demographic characteristics of the population, whilst the National Social and Economic Survey (Susenas) collects data on many social and economic characteristics of the population, such as: consumption, labour, health, and other household variables. The Sakernas is the instrument designed exclusively for measuring labour force characteristics, specifically: i. Employment by education, working hours, industrial classification and employment status. ii. Unemployment by different characteristics iii. Working age population not in the labour force (e.g. in school, engaged in housekeeping). Employment data collection activities were first implemented in 1976, but only since 1986 was it implemented periodically. Sakernas has undergone several changes both in enumeration period and in scope of areas covered and household samples. In 1987, Sakernas was implemented quarterly with the purpose of understanding the state of labour force in Indonesia and its sustainability, particularly to obtain data on the number of people who are employed and who are looking for employment (unemployment) continuously between quarters both for the national and regional levels. The dataset available from the Australian Data Archives includes all four quarters of the 1987 Sakernas Enumeration; February 1987 (1st Quarter), May 1987 (2nd Quarter), August 1987 (3rd Quarter), November 1987 (4th Quarter).
