The Z and W chromosomes of the Schistosoma mansoni genome have consistently assembled into a haploid mosaic consensus that doesn't represent the true sequence of either chromosome. This is due to many regions of near-identical sequences, plus large numbers of complex repeats. The published draft had 294 Mb (81%) of the data assigned to chromosomes. Information from a genetic map has enabled some of the genome to be assigned to ZW. However, ZW remains largely undifferentiated in the assembly, and the repetitive W-specific regions remain largely unassembled. This study aims to isolate genomic DNA from male and female adults and generate seperate female and male-specific PacBio libraries. This data will be used to improve the ZW chromosomes.
