VPRS 14670 Photograph Albums

These records were created to document in photographic images the construction of buildings while the work was in progress.Photograph Album No. 4 includes photographs of the Geelong and Williamstown Terminal Elevators; Country Elevators in the Geelong and Williamstown Areas; and, Emergency Wheat Storage sheds at Murtoa and Dunolly.The whereabouts of albums other than No. 4 are unknown.The Grain Elevator Act 1934 provided for the handling of grain in bulk, for wheat within defined areas to be delivered to elevators, and for the constitution of the Grain Elevators Board (GEB). Work commenced on the Geelong terminal elevator in 1936 under the supervision of the GEB.As part of the initial scheme a further 91 elevator units were to be constructed at 81 country railway stations. A contract for this work was let by the GEB to the Railway Construction Branch of the Board of Land and Works, and construction commenced in 1938.The construction of an emergency bulk wheat storage shed at Murtoa was commenced in 1942 and another was built in Dunolly in 1943. They were Commonwealth Wheat Storages built on behalf of the Australian Wheat Board by the [Victorian] Railway Construction Branch, Board of Land and Works.
