Observations of Galaxy Clusters Discovered with Sunyaev-Zel.dovich Effect Survey

The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has recently reported the first opticallyconfirmed clusters discovered via the SZ effect. In addition, SPT has detecteddozens more sources believed to be high redshift, 0.5 < z < 1.0, massiveclusters. We propose to use XMMNewton to make observations of six of thebrightest clusters detected by the SPT. Followup observations of these clustersvia Xrays is essential in understanding the selection function of the survey bylinking the SZ observed flux to mass using the assumption of hydrostaticequilibrium and the Xray temperature. A detailed comparison of the Xray and SZobservations will also tell us much about the physics and evolution of thesepreviously undiscovered SZ effect selected clusters. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
