This Access database contains locations, dates, times, and numbers of walruses estimated from thermal imagery and photography as they were
hauled out on Bering Sea pack ice in Russia. All data in Russia were collected from 03 April 2006 to 23 April 2006 Alaska Standard Time. An
associated database contains estimated numbers of walruses hauled out on Bering Sea pack ice on the US side. An additional associated database
contains haulout information from satellite tagged walruses that was used to estimate the proportion of the population in the water and unavailable
for detection by the thermal scanners. These datasets were archived as part of the North Pacific Research Board legacy project recovery effort undertaken by Axiom Data Science and NPRB in 2025. The goal of the recovery effort was to assess the NPRB-funded data projects from 2002 to 2014 and archive final data packages that were ready for publication to increase long-term accessibility and discoverability. Data packages were archived as is given limited funding and resources.
