The CritPt dataset is a benchmark specifically designed to evaluate the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) when tackling problems in cutting-edge physics research. It comprises 71 complex research challenges, which are constructed to simulate entry-level full-scale research projects and decomposed into 190 simpler checkpoint tasks to provide more fine-grained insights. All problems were newly created by over 50 active physics researchers based on their own research work, and each problem has been meticulously curated to feature guess-resistant and machine-verifiable answers, with evaluation conducted via a highly automated scoring pipeline tailored to the specific output formats of advanced physics research. The CritPt dataset aims to uncover the significant gap between the current capabilities of state-of-the-art LLMs and the actual requirements of real-world physics research, thereby laying a solid foundation for scientifically guiding the development of artificial intelligence.
