NRS-21888 | Legal Counsel Assisting files [Royal Commission into the former Chelmsford Private Hospital and Mental Health Services in New South Wales]

This series comprises reference files created by Commission staff to assist Legal Counsel. The files include patients, witnesses, experts, specialists, universities and professional associations, overseas government authorities, and hospitals. Some of these categories were written on the boxes but not on the files themselves.The files for patients are indexed in the inside cover of the file with a document checklist that records who created the file from the Commission for the Counsel and the patient's name.The checklist included: Date of Admission, Nurses Notes, Dr Bailey's File, Dr Bailey's Exercise Book, Register of Patients, Day Book, Health Commission, Other hospital files, Death Certificate, Inquest files, Other sources, Sighted by instructing Solicitors, Copies distributed to Parties on, Parties to whom copies distributed.Some of the assisting patient files also have an additional list of documents included on the first page of file. Assisting files were created for both Term 1 and Term 2 of the Commission. The files are a comprehensive summary of the individual or organisation. As most of the material has been photocopied from the original documentation the legibility can sometimes be problematic.Arrangement of the filesThe files are mostly housed in surplus Premier's Department blank file covers (yellow for /86 and blue for /87) which have been used from 1988 by the Royal Commission. The Commission assigned its own number to most files. The files were generally not filed in order by this file number. The Term 1 files are loosely alphabetical with some categories assigned to Term 2 assisting files which also includes a second alphabetical sequence.
