Drosophila suzukii genome project at Fondazione E. Mach

Drosophila has provided science with exemplar cases of adaptation and innovation. A recent example is the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Ds), which, opposite to most other Drosophila species, lays eggs and feeds on unwounded ripening fruits. To assist in various research lines we have sequenced the genome of a F5 inbreed Ds line to a depth of 100X using Illumina (HiSeq 2000). Ds genome is comparable both in terms of size and number of repeated elements to that of 21 other sequenced Drosophila genomes. This draft genome provides an invaluablae tool for further understanding the origin of a novel Drosophila ecological behavior.
