Exceptional preservation of terrestrial organic matter in a Late Devonian carbonate

This site comprises analyses of a sample collected from the Squaw Bay formation in Michigan in 2009 by Michael Tuite. The sample is a Devonian-age, cephalopod-rich carbonate that includes large fragments of wood and other plant tissues. Analyses include thin-section images, and GC-MS.

The sample itself consists of a few frogments collected at an outcrop of the Squaw Bay Formation on the shore of Lake Huron in northern Michigan, USA. The outcrop is a flat-lying exposure just above lake level (see pictures Site Images folder).
