Peritoneal fluid was harvested aseptically from mice 16 h after CLP and cultured as described in the Methods section.aGrowth was estimated by scoring the number of plate quadrants covered with colonies following streaking, i.e. 1+ = one quadrant, 2+ = two quadrants, etc.bOnly isolated colonies were observed that did not fill one quadrant.cDefinitive identification of the genus and species was not possible. In this case, bacteria were identified based solely on Gram stain morphology and growth characteristics.
