In the nitrogen-limited subtropical gyres, diazotrophic cyanobacteria like Crocosphaera provide an essential ecosystem service by converting dinitrogen gas into ammonia to support primary production in these oligotrophic regimes. Natural variation in the availability of important nutrients such as phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) in the subtropical and tropical oceans constrain the biogeography and function of diazotrophs including the unicellular cyanobacterium, Crocosphaera.This RNAseq dataset will enable a better understanding on the effects of individual (Fe or P) and simultaneous (Fe and P) nutrient availability on Crocosphaera physiology and activity.
