资源简介:
This collection comprises images from Historic Building Recording at Church Hall, Hall Street, Barnard Castle, County Durham. This work was undertaken by Rocket Heritage and Archaeology Ltd in November 2022. The Hall Street Congregational Church was built to a style common to non-conformist places of worship in the earlier 19th century. It was constructed using local stone and was a ceremonial space, vestry to the southwest and separate Sunday School to the rear. The records of building works in the 1940s and of changes made in the 1970s, 1990s and early 2000s are supported by the visible fabric of the building today. Although at first appearing to retain numerous original features, close inspection shows that only elements of the first-floor gallery panelling and floorboards, the ceiling rose, staircase, and all but one of the ground floor pillars are original. The design of the stained-glass windows in the south elevation is late 19th or early 20th century and indicates that they are a later replacement. Despite the many alterations, the layout of the building and features enable its function as a place of worship to still be appreciated. This record demonstrates that the church was repeatedly remodelled to suit the evolving needs of the congregation during the 20th century.
