Harnessing indigenous microalgae diversity from diverse ecological habitats as sustainable biorefinery feedstocks for biofuels and nutraceuticals.

The present study investigates the microalgal diversity present in three distinct agro-ecological zones of Kerala, each varying considerably in topography, rainfall patterns, and altitude. A total of 209 freshwater microalgae strains were identified from 19 selected sites, showcasing the richness of diversity across these regions. Furthermore, 30 microalgae strains were isolated (Chlorophyceae: 16, Cyanophyceae: 14) and screened for their potential in lipid and pigment productivity. The study highlights the potential of several isolated strains as promising candidates for biofuel and pigment production and their integration into a microalgae-based biorefinery.
