The central goal of this study was to examine the ecophysiological characteristics of a newly isolated nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria in terms of its suitability for outdoor biomass production systems. The study had two major objectives: (1) To purify cultures of Cyanothece sp. BG0011, sequence its genome, and begin genome annotation using gene prediction programs, as a first step in the long-term effort to identify the genetic mechanisms that may define its physiological limitations and capabilities, and (2) To determine the responses of growth to a range of environmental factors, including temperature, salinity, nitrogen sources and natural light conditions.
