Sand rice (Agriophyllum squarrosum) is a typical pioneer annual psammophyte of the Chenopodiaceae family, with impressive drought tolerance and excellent nutrition value. However, there is lack of information underlying its adaptation to drought stress. With the aim to elucidate the adaptive mechanism of sand rice in response to drought stress, physiological and RNA sequencing-based transcriptomic responses were analyzed in semi-arid (Aerxiang) and arid (Wuwei) ecotypes exposed to drought stress and re-watering conditions.
