The application of ChatGPT in the English classroom and the study of its impact on students' writing ability

In the current era, the demand for the use of generative AI in teaching has received attention, and according to the Cambridge University Press & Assessment, GenAI is developing at an alarming rate. Teachers and students take the initiative to come into contact with these diverse AI systems in daily life, but they do not know how to correctly use it in teaching and do not know how to design logical teaching methods. In order to promote English teachers to be able to reasonably use the efficient and technological tools to assist their teaching, and devote teaching examples to this cause. Based on Stylistic interaction theory, Associative memory theory, Level processing theory, and combining ChatGPT system, the author designs a series of teaching methods suitable for college students' English writing. The ChatGPT assisted teaching experiment was conducted on Chinese sophomore students studying in Thailand, and a controlled experiment was conducted to explore whether this teaching method can effectively promote students' writing quality.To reach a conclusion on whether classroom guided teaching with ChatGPT software can effectively improve students' writing quality. In addition, the author uses IELTS writing scoring criteria to conduct data statistics, and further finds out the different effects of this teaching method on different writing scoring indicators. The results showed a positive consequence of the application of ChatGPT in ELT classrooms on students’ writing quality.
