Number of pensioners and contributors in France 2005-2020

Although the French pension system, which is based on redistribution, is presented as a unique and stable system, it has a weakness: it depends on demography and a balanced ratio between the number of active contributors and the number of retirees, so that enough people are able to finance the pensions of older people. However, the number of pensioners is increasing faster than the number of contributors. Indeed, between 2005 and 2020, the number of retired people increased by 3.65 million, while the number of contributors only grew by 1.91 million.
