VPRS 1703 Register Of Applications Under Intestate Widows Relief Act

Commencing operation in 1890, The Intestate Widows Relief Act 1889 (No 1035), consolidated into the Administration and Probates Act 1890 (No. 1060), allowed application to the County Court Registrar nearest the place of abode (or directly to the Master in Equity) for aid in procuring a grant of probate or of such letters of administration for estates valued at less than five hundred pounds in value. The County Court Registrar was to be responsible for the preparation and forwarding of all necessary documentation. The Master or the Registrar was to be responsible for the collection of the appropriate fee, based on the value of the estate, as set down in the Schedule which was part of the Act.This series contains the applications made to County Courts and the Master in Equity under this Act. Details include the name of the deceased and their residence, from whom the papers were received (usually the registrar of a local County Court or a relative of the deceased), the nature of the application (for Letters of Administration or Probate), the value of the property sworn at, the dates of receipt and issue of the papers and the numbers of documents filed. Also given are details pertaining to the payment of fees and by whom the parchment was received.
