In this study, we investigated the methane oxidation kinetics in the methane-rich hypolimnion compared to the epilimnion with low methane concentrations in a seasonally stratified lake. We focused on the autumn overturn, during which more methane becomes available in the epilimnion. We combined these measurements with an investigation of gene transcription of genes encoding the methane monooxygenase (MMO), which is the enzyme responsible for the first step of methane oxidation. For the samples both metagenomics and metatranscriptomics was performed.
