Inventory of gullies in the Tupanciretã Formation, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

The presented vector dataset brings together the inventory of gullies mapped and vectorized within the Tupanciretã Formation geological unit, located in the north-central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between 2022 and 2023. This formation corresponds to a sedimentary sequence composed predominantly of poorly consolidated sandstones, with basal conglomerates and interbedded siltstones, stratigraphically overlying the volcano-sedimentary package of the Paraná Basin, whose top is represented by the Serra Geral Formation. The mapping covered the entire area of the geological unit as delineated by the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM, 2008), also encompassing a 10 km buffer zone around its boundaries, totaling 1,147,750 ha (4% of the state’s territory). Given the large territorial extent analyzed and the diversity of information contained in the aerial images, the area of interest was subdivided into rectangular quadrants imported into Google Earth Pro. Remote mapping was performed manually, through visual interpretation, using images from the GeoEye satellite. The gullies were initially recorded as KMZ polygons, later converted into vector files (shapefiles), totaling 351 units. Each feature has an identification code (POL-1 to POL-351), along with perimeter, area, and orientation data. This study is part of a master’s dissertation in the Graduate Program in Remote Sensing (PPGSR) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), developed by members of the LATITUDE research group (Geological, Geomorphological, and Landscape Dynamics Remote Sensing).
