NRS-20782 | Annual lease registers [Maitland Land Board Office]

This series is a record of annual leases approved by the Maitland Land Board Office.Annual leases were established under the Crown Lands Act of 1884 (48Vic. No.18). An annual lease for unoccupied land, not reserved, could be obtained for grazing purposes upon application to the Local Crown Land Agent. (1) The registers record information such as name and address of applicant, and of transferee if lease was transferred, date of application, registration numbers, reference number in relation to District Surveyors office, action taken on application prior to gazettal, reference to board's actions and minute books, particulars of land including parish and county area,  number of leases granted, annual rent and particulars of any refunds given. The register for 1885-1893, which measures 56 x 38 x 13 cm records the same information as subsequent registers but is ordered using a numerical numbering scheme by lease no, with all land districts interfiled. It has no index. Subsequent registers measure 48 x 32 x 4 cm and have sections allotted to each land district each arranged chronologically and numerically. There is an index in the front of each register arranged alphabetically by applicants' surnames, and an index of districts.Department of Lands circular 12/1935 states that by 31 December 1935 bound registers should be replaced by a card system.
