Device for splitting long timber with splitting tongs (2) formed from two arched splitting arms (1a， 1b)， the two splitting arms (1a， 1b) being pivotably mounted on a support (4) and splitting knives (3a， 3a， 3b)， which by means of a hydraulic cylinder (6) move from an open position to a closed position in which the splitting knives (3a， 3b) lie against one another and are connected to the carrier (4) and the two splitting arms (1a， 1b) delimit a receiving space for split timber with an essentially elliptical cross-section， are movable. It is proposed that the ratio (v) of the lengths of the main axis (a) to the transverse axis (b) of the elliptical receiving space is 1.7-2.0， the split arms (1a， 1b) each being designed as two-armed levers， the first arm of which is the splitting knife (3a， 3b) and on the second arm of which the hydraulic cylinder (6) is articulated， which is in a substantially horizontal position between the two gap arms (1a， 1b) above the carrier (4).
