POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, STARCH, AND PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSES, AND CHARCOAL IDENTIFICATION OF SAMPLES FROM THE HOLMES DRAW SITE, 48CA2834, SCHOOL CREEK MINE, WYOMING

The Holmes Draw Site, 48CA2834, is a lithic scatter and campsite located on private land on the east and west sides of Holmes Draw drainage in Campbell County, Wyoming, that was excavated over a period of years. A single sediment sample collected from a living surface observed at the site was examined for pollen and phytoliths to identify economic activity on the surface. A mano was submitted for pollen, phytolith, and starch analyses to identify plant resources processed with this tool, and an endscraper was tested for possible protein residues. Six charcoal samples were submitted for identification. The living surface, tools, and charcoal from Blocks 8, 9, and 11 in Area D are associated with the Early Plains Archaic component of the site (radiocarbon dates around 6000 to 6500 B.C.), while a radiocarbon date around A.D. 900 for charcoal from Feature D-B7-F1 reflects a Late Prehistoric component. After these analyses an additional soil sample was submitted for pollen and phytolith analysis.
