The goal of this research was to investigate the microbial and phytoplankton community across the physical and chemical gradients with depth and seasonally within the Grosses Heiliges Meer. The Grosses Heiliges Meer is a dimictic lake in northern Germany that becomes anoxic and has elevated dissolved iron concentrations in the hypolimnion during stratification. It has a pronounced subsurface chlorophyll maximum. Water samples were filtered from multiple depths in September 2014, May 2015 and September 2018 and DNA was extracted from filters. This DNA was used for 16S and 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing.
