In situ characterization of the genomic content of viruses of formatotrophs in mesophilic batch anaerobic digestion reactors

In situ characterization of the genomic content of viruses of mesophilic formatotrophs in organic waste batch anaerobic digesters (Project VIRAME). Batch anaerobic digestion reactors were fed with 13-formate in order to activate and label formatotrophs during incubation at 35°C. Thanks to this stable isotope probing approach, the fermatotrophs were identified and shotgun metagenomic data enabled to build a spacer database and a metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) database. Those databases were use to identify viruses of formatotrophs thanks to an approach based on spacer-alignement and another approach based on k-mer signatures.
