Lord Mayors and Town Clerks conferences were held to discuss matters of common interest to councils of capital cities such as urban renewal, revenue raising, community health, and parking amongst other things.Series Date RangeThe earliest minutes in this series date from 1954 and go to 1978. However, the inaugural conference of Lord Mayors of capital cities was held in Melbourne in February 1950. The recommendations made at that meeting were tabled by the Town Clerk at the Council meeting held 27 February 1950. See Council Proceedings of 1949-1950 at pages 408-410, VPRS 8911/P1, unit 73).This series does not include the minutes of every conference that has been held. There is a list of contents at the front of the volume. These are the only minutes known to exist as at 1995.Minutes of meetings held since 1978 have not been located.Changes to Title of ConferenceUntil 1965 the conferences were officially for Lord Mayors - with Town Clerks in attendance. Since 1966 Lord Mayors and Town Clerks were both included in the comference title.The Australian Capital Cities Secretariat was initiated in 1962 (see VA 3746). Since 1966, the papers and official minutes of the conferences were distributed under the auspicaes of the Australian Capital Cities Secretariat.
