Here, we describe and characterize novel isolates obtained from a Boer goat fecal sample. The isolates form small, mostly round, dense colonies on agar rolltubes and produce flaky, loosely clumped white biomass in liquid medium. Microscopic features include monoflagellated, spherical zoospores and monocentric, filamentous thallus development. Sporangia were spherical or ovoid, although elongated and oddly shaped sporangia have frequently been observed. Zoospore-release was observed through ruptures in the apical sporangial wall.Phylogenetic analysis using the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1), the D1-D2 region of the large ribosomal subunit (D1-D2 LSU) as well as the full fragment between those two regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-D1-D2-LSU) showed the isolates to be a monophyletic clade closely related to Joblinomyces apicalis (3.51-4.57% sequence divergence in ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-D1-D2-LSU, 2.50-3.82% in D1-D2 LSU, and 0.00-1.30% divergence in ITS1). Average amino acid identity values (AAI) between the novel isolate and other mammalian-derived AGF genera ranged from 70.11 to 75.40% (average 72.53 +/- 1.43%). Unfortunately, no transcriptome is available for Joblinomyces apicalis.Based on morphological and phylogenetic analysis we propose to accommodate the novel isolates as a novel species within the genus Joblinomyces and propose the name of Joblinomcyes undulatus. The type strain for this species is JC3.3.
